How long does it take for wood to lose its looks when exposed to the elements continually? Not long. Expect maintenance after year 2, or earlier, and replace in at least 7 years. It's a lot of work to maintain wood. However, it's perfectly possible these days to get the look and feel of wood but without the yearly round of maintenance, painting, etc. All you have to do is replace your wooden garden bench or raised bed, or planter with a synthetic wood equivalent.
